401ks & the joy of handwritten holiday cards

| December 18, 2024

In an era dominated by digital communication, where emojis replace heartfelt expressions and instant messaging eclipses thoughtful prose, the tradition of handwritten holiday cards stands as a beacon of authenticity and warmth. While a quick text or e-card may suffice for many, the effort and sentiment behind a handwritten card offer a uniquely personal touch that no digital equivalent can replicate.

I was ruminating on this as we did our level best to send out our holiday cards. We strive to personalize each card. We think about how we got each client and truly thank them for being part of our family.

The cards themselves are handmade by 83-year-old Portland, OR painter, Jay Sanford. Each card has a handmade painting attached to it. Clients frequently mention they recycle the card but frame the painting. Jay's cards have been mailed around the world.

Why do we spend so much time and effort on these cards? Here are a bunch of reasons.

A Gesture of Thoughtfulness

A handwritten holiday card demonstrates genuine thoughtfulness. From selecting the perfect card to penning a heartfelt message, the process requires time, effort, and attention to detail. For us, this intentionality conveys how much we value our clients. They are worth the effort—a sentiment that resonates deeply during the holiday season, a time for connection and gratitude.

The Tangible Connection

In a world where digital interactions are fleeting, the physicality of a handwritten card provides a sense of permanence. A handwritten card can be held, displayed on a mantel, or tucked away as a cherished keepsake. The tactile experience of opening an envelope, feeling the texture of the paper, and reading words written in a familiar hand creates a connection that transcends the digital realm.

Numerous clients have sent us photos of their framed Jay Sanford cards. Others have asked when the cards are arriving. Jay is getting on in years and has had some cancer scares. We will be ordering a huge amount of his cards in the New Year to stock up. I have looked at other handprinted cards and his really stand out.

Uniqueness in Every Stroke

Handwritten messages capture individuality in a way no typed text can. The unique quirks of handwriting, from elegant cursive to hurried scrawl, reflect the sender’s personality and emotions. Even small imperfections—smudges of ink or slightly uneven lettering—add to the charm and authenticity of the gesture.

On the funny side, I have my wife, Rose write the cards. Her handwriting is need. Mine looks like drunken Egyptian hieroglyphics. I also fret over the smudges and mistakes. No bueno in my book. Rose gets it right each time.

A Moment to Slow Down

The act of writing holiday cards offers a welcome pause in a busy season. It is a chance to reflect on the relationships that matter most, to recall shared memories, and to craft messages that nurture those connections. This intentional pause can be as meaningful for the writer as it is for the recipient.

Put a different way, this is an exercise in mindfulness. This is our way of slowing down and remembering those who are part of our family and how grateful we are.

Rekindling a Fading Tradition

While technology offers convenience, it often lacks the warmth of a personal touch. By choosing to send handwritten holiday cards, we are trying to help preserve a tradition that fosters deeper connections. In a mailbox typically filled with bills and advertisements, a colorful envelope bearing a handwritten address is a delightful surprise—a reminder of simpler, more personal times.

Folks seem to appreciate it. The only thing we will change next year is we will start earlier next year! November it is!

The Parting Glass

In my view, the joy of handwritten holiday cards lies in their ability to make people feel seen, valued, and loved. They are a testament to the power of human connection in an increasingly impersonal world. This holiday season, consider picking up a pen and sharing your sentiments the old-fashioned way. The impact of your thoughtfulness will undoubtedly resonate far beyond the ink on the page.

In short, handwritten holiday cards are our way of saying, "Thank you. We love you and are grateful for you".

Peace.
