4th of July and yes, I recall my 8th grade history class reading the Declaration of Independence. "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". "All men are created equal ". And well I remember standing up every day for the Pledge of Allegiance. "With liberty and justice for all". But have we as a nation achieved those three ideals? Given that these ideals are part of our country's founding documents/ something we say we are for, shouldn't we make them a reality?
"Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" remains a powerful ideal, but economic inequality, political polarization, and declining social mobility have eroded broad-based belief in its attainability. For many, especially in marginalized communities, systemic barriers persist, making the "pursuit" far harder than the rhetoric suggests.
"All men are created equal" and "With liberty and justice for all" are still central to American identity, but the practical applications have always been uneven. Racial, gender, and class disparities continue to challenge this principle. Equality under the law exists in theory more than in consistent practice.
These ideals are not dead, but they are at risk of becoming hollow. But what is needed to make these three ideals a reality?
Achieving the American ideals of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness", "all men are created equal", and "With Liberty and Justice for all" requires a multifaceted approach grounded in systemic reform, cultural evolution, and individual responsibility. Key components include:
Equal Access to Opportunity. This includes a focus on 1)Education: Universal access to quality education to break cycles of poverty. 2) Healthcare: Affordable, preventative healthcare to secure life and productivity. 3) Economic Mobility: Policies that reduce barriers to upward mobility—fair wages, job training, and access to capital.
Legal and Criminal Justice Reform. What is needed? 1) Eliminate systemic biases in policing, sentencing, and incarceration. 2) Ensure equal protection under the law, regardless of race, gender, or background.
Democratic Integrity: 1) Protect voting rights and ensure representative political participation and 2) Combat disinformation and strengthen civic education.
Cultural Norm Shifts: This is a tougher road to hoe but not undoable. We need to promote empathy, civic responsibility, and pluralism. Addressing implicit bias through education and media representation is also required.
Economic Fairness: We must address wealth inequality through tax reform and support for working-class families. Fostering inclusive capitalism that balances profit with social impact is needed as well.
The Parting Glass
These ideals require deliberate policy, inclusive leadership, and sustained civic engagement. Without structural equity and a cultural commitment to shared humanity, these founding promises remain aspirational rather than realized. They are worthy ideals to achieve and are ones that we have committed ourselves to. As we approach 250 years that this country has existed and as we celebrate independence, shouldn't we tackle these now?
